5 Smart (And Weird) Methods To Get Rid Of Paint Smell
If painting a room has a downside, it’s the smell.
After spending the whole afternoon adding a fresh coat of paint, you still need to wait until the paint smell disappears. However, you can use some tricks to accelerate the process!
Here are five ways you can get rid of paint smell.
What causes the fresh-paint smell?
The paint itself doesn’t cause the smell, but the released VOCs (volatile organic compounds.) Most are added as solvents, so the paint maintains its liquid form. However, once you roll the paint on the wall, it starts releasing the VOCs into the air while it dries.
How long will it take the smell to go away? It depends on the type of paint you use. Latex paints could take just a few hours, while oil-based paints can take more than 36 hours. It also varies from manufacturer to manufacturer, depending on the ingredients used in the paint.
How to get rid of paint smells
Usually, when you are painting a room, the paint fumes will go away with proper ventilation. However, you can use some simple but effective tricks to speed up the process.
Check them out below!
1. Cut some onions
The same compound that makes you cry while cutting an onion (syn-Propanethial-S-oxide) can neutralize the VOCs responsible for paint smell.
To use this trick, cut an onion in half and place each one in different spots. If you painted a large room, you could use more than one onion!
2. Pour vinegar into a bowl
Vinegar contains acetic acid, which also evaporates into the air. The acid molecules will bond with the smelly VOCs and reduce the paint odor in the room! Pour a cup of white vinegar into a small bowl and leave it in the room.
The vinegar smell is preferable to the fresh paint smell, and it will go away in no time!
3. Sprinkle baking soda on the carpet
Baking soda is a staple ingredient in the kitchen and an effective deodorizer! This powder “absorbs” smelly compounds and turns them into odor-free sodium salts. To use this trick, sprinkle baking soda on the carpet and vacuum it after several hours!
4. Reuse your coffee grounds
If you regularly enjoy a cup of coffee in the morning, you can reuse the coffee grounds to get rid of the paint smell! Coffee grounds contain carbon and nitrogen; each plays an essential role in absorbing foul odors. Place dry coffee grounds in a bowl and let them get rid of the paint smell!
5. Let the air flow!
The best way to get rid of paint smells and all the paint fumes in the room is proper ventilation. You could use a trick or two to neutralize foul odors or cover them with air fresheners! However, you can still be exposed to other harmful VOCs that don’t have a smell!
Open the windows and place a fan in the room at least for a couple of hours after painting. Also, you should avoid the room for roughly 72 hours, just to be sure!
